Well, after being sick for 2 weeks straight, I’ve seen a lot of the inside of my medicine cabinet. So that’s what you’ll hear about today- the importance of being organized with medicine during this flu season. No one wants to get sick or expects to get sick, but being prepared for it is essential. While organizing people’s home I see a lot of over buying of medicine and then a lot of waste takes place because it ends up expiring. Try some of these tips to clean up, clean out, and maintain your medicine cabinet.
- My clients generally store medicine in one of three places- the kitchen, linen closet, or medicine cabinet. If possible, get it down to just one spot- two at the max. And make sure the space is a consistent room temperature. Keeping medicine on top of a refrig or above the stove in a cabinet is not ideal.
- Go through your medicines on a regular basis. I usually take a glance at the expiration dates every 2 or 3 months. This way I know what I need to shop for and stock up on.
- Keep your medicines sorted and labeled- for example: cold/flu, pain relief, ointments/itch relief, first aid, etc. This will make it super easy to locate the medicine you’re looking for when feeling your worst.
- Storing your medicine can be tricky if you don’t have a lot of room. So if you’re tight on space don’t buy medicine in bulk. Try a clear over the door shoe organizer to see all the medicine. I also like plastic drawers for underneath sinks or on linen closet shelves. They make it easy to label and sort medicine into.
- Take time to wipe down shelves, baskets, or other containers containing medicine. Cough syrups and other medicines may leak and leave you with a sticky mess.
