Ignorance is not bliss-it ruined my garden

Topics

Recycling

Well, Saturday was a beautiful sunny day. After a run through the neighborhood, my husband and I decided to get into the garden to dig out weeds, stir up the dirt and prepare the soil for a garden. We bought this house last fall so this is my first attempt in this patch of ground. What we found was very disturbing- almost a third of the patch was saturated with motor oil. Our neighbors told us the that the people that lived here two years ago (the house sat empty since then) dumped their dirty motor oil into the ground instead of recycling it properly after changing their car’s oil. No wonder the soil was oily and bluish in color. No weeds grew in that spot and no worms were found. I’m not surprised. We’re still trying to figure out how to salvage the ground and make the most of our little garden. Either the people were very ignorant or very pay. We now have to pay the price. May we all be good stewards of what we’re given and not ruin it for others. If anyone has any idea of what we should do to our soil please post a comment.
