Know your Patterns
When organizing, it’s crucial to notice what patterns you currently have, why you place things where you do, and why piles accumulate in certain spots. Then when organizing you shouldn’t change your patterns, you can change your systems around your patterns. For example, I was recently helping someone get a handle on their mail. It occured to me that keeping the mail sorting station at the back of the house on a desk was a bad idea, we needed to place it right in the front room because the person’s natural pattern fell to that place. Every day he would get his mail and sort it on the front couch. He was too tired and overwhelmed to walk it all the way to the back of the house and conduct “business” back there. It was easier and more convenient to do it right where it was landing and coming in. So all we did was catch him up with the piles of mail and move and modify the mail station to the front of the house. Think through what you naturally do each day- maybe you should create a system that works around what you currently know to be easy or natural for you.
