Ask your neighbor, friend, spouse, or child- what is clutter? They’d all give you a different answer. That is because the affect of clutter is different for each person and that in turn shapes a person’s view or definition of clutter. Dictionary.com describes clutter as a disorderly heap or assemblage. A state or condition of confusion. Confused noise; clatter.
In the organizing world, I tend to describe clutter in this way:
- things you don’t use on a regular basis
- things that encroach on your personal living space(thus affecting the way you live)
- anything unfinished (projects one promises to get done but doesn’t)
- an excess amount of things that aren’t needed (they might be useful but just unnecessary, i.e. 8 pairs of scissors, 40 sippy cups for your toddler)
How do you define clutter in your home or office? I’d like to know.
