Last spring a few friends from church and my husband and I volunteered at a Resale Shop called New To You. I’m forever dropping off donations for clients at local resale shops, Good Wills, and Salvation Army locations so I thought it would be neat and helpful to understand what happens once we drop off all of our unwanted things. I saw the inner workings of New To You and really got a better picture and a clearer understanding of what is and what is not helpful to them. So here’s some food for thought:
- Try to donate things that are in season- i.e. don’t donate wool sweaters in June.
- Donate holiday items a few months before the holiday, not after the holiday has passed.
- Avoid donating broken, stained, or tattered items (or things with missing pieces). A good rule of thumb is: if you would give an item to a friend, it’s fit to donate.
- Be considerate by refraining from donating dirty, dusty, cobweb-covered items. Take time to dust off, vacation out, or wipe down the items. If you don’t, then volunteers have to spend extra time and energy doing the dirty work you didn’t want to do.
- Avoid donating outdated, super old books. No one wants a 1990 France Fodors Guide. Just recycle it.
