Choosing the Right Furniture

Furniture that actually serves a real purpose

Buying “functional” furniture isn’t usually at the top of the furniture shopping list. Most often, people buy furniture because the size fits, the price is right, or it is “looks pretty” to them. In my opinion functionality is key. When shopping, the purchaser doesn’t always think about all the stuff sitting at home that has to be contained. We’re in awe of all the beautiful, clean pieces of furniture and want our homes to look just like the display rooms. So I’ve come up with pieces that in my opinion MUST be functional.

Nightstands. Books, pens, Kleenex, earplugs, lotion end up covering most nightstands. Next time you purchase or bring home a new nightstand make sure it has drawers to hold all that stuff.

Desk. This is my huge pet peeve. I cannot stress this enough.... buy a desk that has drawers and a filing area. A simple frame desk is not realistic. The home decorating magazines always show these in pictures and they are so ineffectual.

End tables. Family rooms and living rooms naturally hold coasters, remote controls, magazines, etc. End tables or coffee tables hide these items when they have shelves or drawers.

TV stands. If you are not going to mount your TV, choose a stand or console with lots of cabinet and drawer space. It will quickly fill with DVDs, CDs, games, etc.
