5 Ways to Transform a Messy Bookshelf

Categorize Books by Subject. Picture yourself standing in Barnes and Noble. What categories to they have? Gardening, religion, history, fiction, non fiction, travel, etc.

Size does Matter. Be mindful of lining up books from tallest to shortest. It creates an orderly appearance

Stack Sideways. To add dimension and use wasted space that is usually floating above the books, stack the books flat on top of one another. I usually grab a series that has uniform bindings.

Avoid overstuffing the shelves. If every bookshelf is packed from end to end with books, you’re displaying too many books. Bookshelves look their best with pictures, pottery, tasteful knick knacks adorning it throughout.

Eliminate dumping. Some struggle with stashing little “junk” on the edges of book shelves, i.e. pocket change, Kleenex, a deck of cards, missing game or puzzle pieces. In order to break the habit, shift all the books forward to the edge of each shelf instead of pushing them back into the bookshelf as far as they will go.
