An Organized Creation
Seeing the importance of Organization in Creation
** Before reading this blog, I want to preface that these are my personal religious views. I’m not using this as a platform to argue a viewpoint, merely express how I see organizing through my worldview.
When I read the Creation story in Genesis 1, I can’t help but see our God as a God of order. He approached His work and His goal in a very methodical, systematic, organized fashion. God set an example of organization from the beginning of time. The first act He recorded was creation and the order of creation is flawless. Each new thing created and established depended on the day or days before itself. There’s no way Adam could have survived psychically without the results of the first five days of creation. Land and water had to be separated and set in place before fish and birds could be added on day five. On day four, God created a maintenance plan. The sun, moon and stars would maintain and uphold what He creates. He created them for three reasons: to separate day and night, to give light, and to govern the cycle of day and night.
There’s no doubt that our God is a God of order. What is even more encouraging is that from the very beginning not one day in history has crumbled or fallen apart. The cycle of one day has continued day after day and He upholds the whole universe perfectly!
The Days of Creation
1. Light
2. Sky/Heavens
3. Land and Sea
4. Moon, Sun, and Stars
5. Sea Creatures and Air Creatures
6. Land Animals and People
7. God Rested
I believe we can glean principles of organization from these seven days and from our God who is perfectly organized in everything He does and everything He created. Here are five that stand out to me.
1. God values organization and practices it. If we are to be as He is, we should strive for organization to our best ability as well. Do you value organization or disregard its’ importance?
2. God only added “stuff” that was necessary and beneficial. He didn’t create clutter and didn’t allow clutter. He saw what was needed and chose things that would bring Him glory. How do we live? Are our possessions and use of possessions bringing Him glory? Are they being used for His benefit or our satisfaction?
3. God’s steps and actions were timely and intentional. There are steps to organization just as we saw steps in creation. People often ask me, what do I need to buy so I can get started? That’s not where I normally start an organizing project. Sorting, decision making, and purging are the first steps to implementing organization. Layout, labeling, shopping, and the final system follow. Whether you’re working with a professional organizer or not, determine the steps you will take from start to finish.
4. God implemented a maintenance plan. He wanted to keep creation running smoothly and functioning because created things- animals and humans would be dependent on light, water, food, etc. Our families, spouses, and kids depend on and benefit from organization more than we realize. Time, money, and energy aren’t wasted when we have good maintenance plans built into our family routine. Some examples are: rotating seasonal clothes and shoes in closets and the mudroom; paying and filing bills on time; meal planning and preparing; doing laundry and getting laundry put away; etc. The list of routines and cycles we establish in our home is endless. What organizing systems are currently working in your home? What areas do you need to improve and change?
5. God obviously is perfect at everything He does but perfection for us is not the goal. That’s why He’s God and we’re not. Working at organization with all your heart and with all you’ve got is what He’s calling you to do. (Col. 3:23). That will be pleasing to Him. How high are your organizing standards and expectations? Too high? Too low?
