Organizing My Thoughts

1

Going from a To Do List to Getting Things Done

This last weekend I was in Columbus, Ohio for the National Organizing Conference of the National Association of Professional Organizers. It was 3 days of non stop organizing classes, keynote speakers, and an organizing product Expo. Of course, I shared this experience with about 1,000 other organizers from around the country. It’s kind of funny running into a lot of other Type A, neat nick, control freaks like myself. Well, not freaks, but you get the picture. At the end of the conference I came home with a huge folder of notes, brochures, and an overloaded brain.

Often while I’m organizing small businesses or home based businesses I stumble upon bags or folders of their own notes from conferences they’ve attended. So I can relate when they ask, “what should I do with all of this?” Like myself, they have spent time, money, and energy going to classes and expos. Most just don’t want to toss it. Well, I agree. So here’s what I’m doing today.

I’ve decided to hold my own mini strategic planning session in my dining room. Thankfully a client cancelled, so I will spend the day collecting my thoughts, writing down fears , dreams, ideas and finally deciding what I can do, want to do, and what I can delegate. I’m using Sharpie markers and huge wall Post It’s to scribble on and organize my thoughts. Once I have my ideas and to do’s organized, I’ll hopefully come up with an action plan and timeline so that I can actually get them done. Having a to do list or a to do pile isn’t good enough. You and I have to make time and schedule time to get things done. Wish me luck!

I attend all kinds of seminars for work and while the information is useful the amount of paper and junk brought back can be unbearable. I unfortunately do wind up throwing it out unless it’s something I have been using.
I love your website --I found it through Angie’s List and it’s motivated me to tackle projects almost right away. Another thought that comes to mind -- not doing anything is also a decision and usually people forget this. Someone mentioned it to me at work and I have to remind myself of it occasionally. Thanks for a great website.
