Five Tips to Control Clutter in Your Teen or College Students Room
- Expect loads and loads of laundry so teach kids how to manage the laundry. Sometimes teens and college students think they need two free hours to get one load washed and dried. That’s not realistic and most adults never ever approach laundry like that. A realistic example which they might overlook could play out like this: 1. start a load after school or work 2. go hang out with friends or study at the library 3. when they come home go back to the wet laundry to transfer it to the dryer 4.then finally after getting up the next morning pull out the clean load and get it into their room. Just talking through scenarios such as that or helping them to fit laundry into their schedule will make a huge difference.
- Don’t wish they’d hang up their clothes. It just doesn’t matter to them. I suggest lots of hooks, knobs, drawers and perhaps a chair in the corner to catch clothes they’ve warn that aren’t dirty just yet. Very few teen and college students want everything hung up perfectly, neat and unwrinkled.
- A functional desk or bookshelf for their school supplies and books is a must. A desk with no drawers just isn’t helpful. Books and school supplies are bound to land on the floor and dresser tops if there are no bookcases. Encourage them also to clean out their paperwork after a semester or two have passed. That will ensure rooms for next semester’s books and paperwork.
- Every student should have a memory box or keepsake drawer. Memorabilia is inevitable. Concert tickets, love notes, autographed books or CDs, greeting cards and pictures will always surface. Have a set place for it.
- With girls, get the makeup, hair stuff and nail polish under control. Label bins or containers to store those things. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to hammer nails in or hang hooks for necklaces, jewelry, scarves and purses. Over the door shoe organizers could also be used to hold all these little things. With boys, music, CDs, DVDs, cords and electronics are prevalent. Designate certain bins, drawers and label.
In this bedroom, I suggested over the door shoe organizers, wall hooks for purses, comestic/nail/hair bins, and an under the bed storage bin.
