Selling Clutter

Last year, my husband and I completed a financial course called Crown Financial. It was very helpful and really put finances in perspective to many areas of our life. Since then, I’ve been receiving their monthly pamphlet called Money Matters. In their January 2010 issue they had a powerful paragraph. I would like to share with you below.

Sell items you are not using. Holding on to assets we don’t use results in clutter. It also dilutes our individual effectiveness. In her book, The Genesis Principle, professional organizer Patty Chirico tells how she was once a “cluttered mess”. Before she became organized, Chirico had a storage room the size of a garage that was full of junk... from dront to back and top to floor. Even worse, that room as costing her a monthly fee.

If your clutter is costing you money, whether that’s storage unit, late fees, over buying or buying duplicates, think twice. Is all the stuff really worth it? How much money are you REALLY wasting? I’d encourage you to find out. Do the math. That might be the motivator you need to start afresh. Get organized. Selling clutter can help pay for the help from a professional organizer.

Try Ebay, Craig’s List, a garage sale, an estate sale or a local consignment shop. Some of those options may sound intimidating. Trust me, they are not. There are Ebay stores across the country that will take things off of your plate and sell the items for you. Any teenager or college student could help you figure out Craigs List and local consignment shops will do the hard part- selling the stuff! All you have to do is drop it off. No more excuses- hop to it! You can do it!
