Act Like You’re Moving

Organizing, Downsizing and Streamlining

We are in the midst of moving season. It might be slower than in years past but none the less, people are packing up clutter, staging their home and making it look as neat as possible so buyers are attracted to buy. We are not staging professionals as you might of guessed but many families hire professional organizers to get make that final push to clear the clutter. As I thought more about what I wanted to share with you, I realized that acting like you are moving will give you the same result. So whether you’re on the move or not, these organizing tips will help get rid of the clutter.

1. Tackle one room at a time. Don’t jump ahead or jump around from room to room. Stay focused.

2. Purchase moving boxes or get them for free

3. Pack up clutter to donate, pitch or store. (The store part only applies if you are storing items while you stage your home. )

3. The most important question to ask is: Do I want to lug this to the next house and unpack it there? Is it really that special or important for me to expend energy packing and unpacking it?

4. Think about how potential buyers or others view your home. The best test is to ask a stranger, someone who doesn’t know you at all, to give you their opinion. That’s one of the biggest benefits to hiring a stager or professional organizer. We view your home through “eyes of a stranger”. We are not connected to you in any way so we can point out things that your sister, neighbor, or friend would not see or notice.

5. Make a list for projects that need to be done, special recycling that needs extra time, or furniture and large items that need to be sold. Creating a master list will organize your thoughts in getting some of the bigger hurdles out of the way and taken care of.  It is common to come across tasks that take extra time to process. It is those tasks you want to keep track of in order to work on them later.

6. Finally, set deadlines. When you are moving, there are always deadlines involved- getting your home organized, staged, photographed, listed on the MLS, and booked for open houses and showings. If you are pretending your moving, set up deadlines as you would if you were selling.
