Fire it Out
Events and Experiences Help Clear Clutter
Pregnancy
Today’s blog has been inspired by a pregnant client and a post on Facebook. Weird combination I know..... As I was organizing closets and drawers with a client who is pregnant, she just started firing things out left and right. Bag after bag left the house for Goodwill. She was making many decisions at lightening speed and didn’t even think twice. At one point, she said, “This feels so good, even therapeutic!” I was happy to bring some organizing therapy into her life. After returning to the office that night, I reflected on the day and past pregnant clients. Many of my “pregnancy” organizing appointments happen the same way. There’s something about being pregnant and wanting everything streamlined and in order. There’s a trigger that goes off and all of a sudden, they are in purging mode. I’ve never been pregnant but I would say this is definitely a bonus to being pregnant. I know the morning sickness and fatigue give it a bad rap but hey, I’ve discovered something good. What about you? If you are pregnant now or have been in the past, does this ring true?
Flooding
Then someone else mentioned on Facebook, flooding. That’s absolutely true. There’s no way around it. If you’ve been hit by the rains here in Chicago a few weeks ago, some of you understand. When the sewers back up or rain water starts pouring in, there’s no questions- you will be getting rid of some stuff no matter what. Of course, I don’t wish flooding on anyone. It is very difficult to clean up, dry out, and sort through wet items. The only upside I suppose is amidst the precious items that have gotten wet, there will be a little (or a lot of) clutter leaving the house.
Moving
I guess moving doesn’t automatically fire things out of the house, but if I were a betting woman, I’d bet that 95% of people that move throw out at least a bag of stuff. Sometimes the pitching happens before the move or as you unpacks boxes, but it does happen. If you have to touch all your items and pack them, you begin to realize the amount of stuff you have, the amount of work and energy the move will take, and then you way the cost. Most will come to the conclusion that: it’s better just to pitch and donate items you really don’t need or haven’t used instead of expending the energy and money to move them.
