The Push
A Balancing Act in the Organizing World
There’s a delicate difference between pushing someone and shoving someone. In my world of organizing, I can’t be too nice or a push over, but I can’t be a bull dozer or a train barreling down the tracks going 75mph. That is quite the balancing act and sometimes it is so hard to get it right. Each of us has a boiling point, a breaking point, or a hot button-whatever you’d like to call it. I aim to never reach that point, but push people close enough to help them make a hard decision, stop procrastinating and emotionally detach from their stuff.
I think that’s really the difference between hiring a professional or organizing with a friend who’s super organized. Ninety five percent of the time, it just doesn’t work. Organizing with a friend, comes across in a whole different light. Their good intentions or “pushing” as I call it, often comes across as judgmental, critical, and hypocritical.
We don’t serve the Chicago land area just be good sorters, filers, and organizers of things. Ideally, we give them a push, a tug, and a reason to let things go. We give them a question based in reality and perspective from an unbiased feeling and emotion. The solution then is a freeing and new perspective, system, or solution to a space you’ve been stuck in.
Maybe you’re thinking, I don’t need pushing, just help. That’s the flipside. We love it when we have a client rearing to go, ready to make decisions, and completely on board. But regardless, organizing with a professional one on one is an art form, a unique set of traits, and a trained skill. I really believe 75-80% of organizing has to do with relating to and working with people’s attitudes, perspectives, and emotions regarding their stuff. The stuff is the easy part. We’ll make space for it, find a resource to take it, or research a way to recycle it.
