Garage Organizing Made Simple
This week I worked in a garage and it has inspired me to write some quick tidbits to you about creating and maintaining a more organized garage.
- Don’t use cardboard boxes. This is a huge mistake I see people make. By doing this you’re asking the mice, spiders, dust and other critters to make themselves at home.
- Do containerize anything you think a mouse would like to eat: fall decorations that contain corn husks, grass seed, gardening food, bird seed, etc. Try to think like a mouse- would they nibble on it for food? If you think so, please put it in a tight container.
- Don’t store photos, paper, or books in the garage. The moisture and extreme temperature change here in the Midwest really does affect any type of paper. Pages will stick together, start to disintegrate and even attract mice. Yes, they chew on pages.
- Do label containers and shelving. The garage is a place where the whole family will access and look for things. Keep everyone on the same page with labels.
- Don’t block windows. Light is always good in dark, dingy spaces. So steer clear from stacking things in front of windows.
- Do use lots of nails, hooks, screws, or store bought professional tracking systems to get things up off the floor. I like to assign one wall for hanging garden tools and shovels, one wall for free standing shelving for large items and one wall for free standing shelving for small categorical items such as : auto, garden, tools, etc.
- Don’t embed or hide things within other things if at all possible. It’s really hard to remember what’s in what and doesn’t make retrieving the item simple. Ideally, you should keep things as simple to access as possible.
