Keeping Winter Wear Under Control

Nobody wants to search ten minutes for their missing mitten or glove. So how do we manage keeping hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves all organized and accessible? Here are some organizing tips to help you keep it all under control.

1. Assign a pair of gloves or mittens to each winter coat. Just keep the pair inside the coat and you’ll never have to dig for gloves or mittens inside the closet.

2. Hang your scarves on hooks. Command hooks are an easy solution, reasonably priced, and can be removed with no fuss or damage to the wall once the winter season is over.

3. A common solution for mud rooms, closets, and front hall entryways are baskets or containers or drawers. That’s a great solution for mittens and hats. The only important piece I’d add to this tip is assign one basket or container to each person. Label it. Some put all hats together in one bin and another full of all mittens, etc. That actually confuses the situation. Just assign one bin per person. If one person has too many to fit into one bin, that family member needs to get rid of some.

4. Throw out any tattered, frayed, mate-less mitten, glove, hat or scarf.

5. If your family likes to ski and has specific items such as ski goggles or face masks, just assign one spot for all of it. It doesn’t have to be front and center if you only ski once a month or once a season. Keep the items you wear daily in the most prominent, convenient spot.
