When Our Wallet Stops Us From Just Letting Go...
Letting go of things that we spent hard earned money on, is often a tough battle while organizing. There’s something about knowing how much we spent. It convinces us that we deserve that dollar amount back or we need to get the most use of out of it, to make it okay to let it go. I want to encourage you to think of it in the opposite light. Keeping something just because we paid money for it, actually increases the guilt we experience every time we look at it. I don’t know about you, but when I make a bad purchase, keeping it around makes me feel worse, not better. The faster I let it go and forget about it the better. Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t trying selling something if it’s worth money, but definitely use your best judgment and value your time and sanity, instead of trying to get a dollar for every single item.
I also want you to consider how important it is to think about how you’re spending money. Sometimes we get so caught up in the fun of shopping and finding a good deal, that we don’t count the cost of bringing it home. Whatever we bring home, takes up space and takes our energy in maintaining it. If we bring too much home, we’re back to the first problem where we feel that we can’t let go because we’ve spent money on it. It can become a viscous cycle.
So what’s the solution?
- Be aware of your spending and saving patterns.
- Consider a drastic change and a major purge.
- Plan and host a garage sale to recoup some of the money lost or try Craig’s List or Ebay.
- Make space and clear surfaces, a higher priority than the stuff that’s currently overcrowding the space.
- Finally, don’t feel guilty that money is lost. Decide to do something about it now, so you’ll make better decisions going forward.
