Trying Clothes On Makes A Huge Difference While Organizing
Last Sunday I was motivated to go through my closets and just try on all pants, skirts, and dresses. I must admit, I’ve never done this before.. ever. I usually just glance at the clothes to see what I can purge out as the seasons change. But this time, I wanted to try something new. It’s always easier to make the decision to keep it or not once you see how it fits and I’ve also been on a fitness kick since about February so many things just don’t fit anymore.
So out came the clothes onto my bed. Every last skirt, dress and pair of pants was considered. Half way into trying everything on, I realized how helpful this exercise really was. It let me see what I needed to buy, what I had, and what didn’t fit. In the end I had a massive pile of clothes and shoes to give to Goodwill. It felt very freeing and very productive. The best part was my husband realized how many clothes didn’t fit me anymore. He told me to go buy more!
Whether you’ve gained weight or lost weight, think of this as a freeing and motivating experience. I’m motivated to keep the weight off because I don’t want to buy a bigger size and while losing the weight I was determined to see how many sizes I could drop. Putting weight or size aside, keeping just what fits and just what looks good on you, makes getting dressed easier. It also give you an organized and efficient closet!
Some final tidbits to remember:
- If there are clothes that don’t match anything else but you don’t want to let the piece go, make a list of colors or items you need to make an outfit.
- Still hemming and hawing over something? Give yourself one more season to see if you’ll wear it. Mark it somehow with a safety pin perhaps to make it stand out. Next time you go through the closet, if can be the first to go if you haven’t worn it.
- Count how many things you do get rid of. Knowing a concrete number can be very encouraging instead of just filling bags.
If you’re going to have a “date with your closet”, let me know how it goes! Hopefully you’ll have a lighter load and a freer more confident spirit as you get dressed!
