A Look Inside My Office

2

Plain Yet Purposeful

While organizing paper or home offices, how I run and organize my office normally surfaces in the conversation. To me, it  really reflects what I’m all about- no nonsense, straight forward simplicity. If it works, I don’t change it and if it’s not working I get rid of it. I’m not about fancy or aesthetics. I would love for it to be more unique, pretty and decorated but that’s not my gift. I stick to organizing so I would have no idea how to spruce it up. I’m all about functionality. So here’s a picture of my office. Pretty plain but HIGHLY functional and efficient.

I decided to mount ELFA on the wall from the Container Store. I didn’t want bulky furniture and couldn’t find a desk that suited my needs. So this worked just fine. I’ll start at the top and work my way down in the spaces’ functionality.

  • Each box and magazine holder has specific contents such as office supplies, etc. Each one is also labeled so I can recall what’s inside.
  • There’s also shelf space off to the right for current organizing books and some of my husband’s binders. His side is on the right side but since getting a laptop he rarely sits there. I should spread out and use that work space but haven’t found I needed extra space just yet.
  • On the very top right there’s a few photo boxes of loose photos from years prior to digital photography. There aren’t many because most of the printed photos I have are in albums or scrapbooks. I chose books and albums to take up space instead of boxes of loose photos. Now I rarely print photos, which I find true for many of my clients.
  • The mess on the middle wall is actually my fabric bulletin board. It mostly holds family favorite photos and fun sayings or small momentos. My favorite clip says “Born to Organize“. I really believe that’s true. When God made me, that was my gift. I was born to organize.
  • Next we have the desk surface. Obviously, I love and need my HP OfficeJet Pro All-in-One printer.
  • The blue binder that sits next to the printer is my new leads binder. Prospective clients and new leads sit in that binder. Directly next to it is my bookkeeping file folder. You really can’t see it in the picture but all week long I’m putting bills, invoices, and receipts in it. So on Friday’s when I do bookkeeping, I’ve got it all ready and in one place to do it quickly.
  • My monitor is on a small narrow shelf raised up to eye level. That small shelf holds lots of little things- a coaster for drinks, my Ipod Nano, my business cards, and pencil cup.
  • On the very far left I hung my tiny calendar, family birthday dates, and my triathlon ribbons. I use Outlook to track my appointments but it’s nice to have a calendar to glance at on the wall too.
  • All that’s left is my phone and pencil sharpener on the main part of the desk. My to do’s usually sit stacked right there in front of me and I visit them daily to see what I’m going to work on. When I took this picture, I was all caught up.

Here’s the other side of the office. My piano, filing cabinet, shredder, perch for my cat and recycling bin. The top drawer on the filing cabinet is my business files and the bottom drawer is our personal paperwork. It took awhile to condense my files. I used to have a four drawer cabinet but I finally decided enough is enough and got rid of as much as I could. I use my shredder every day to shred a ton of mail.

What system or solution has helped you in your home office? I’d love to hear about it, or better yet, send a picture!

I love your desk!

Where did you purchase it @?

It looks a little custom made, seeing as how some of the shelves are attached to the wall but yet attached to the desk at the same time.. hmm

I’m on the hunt for a desk and I’ve been seeing some good ones @Ikea. They’re nice and all but I’m not sure if they will be as purposeful as this one?
